Recreation:

Newton County is blessed to have an abundance of recreational opportunities. If you are looking for organized sports for either yourself or your children, the Covington Family YMCA or the Newton County Recreation Commission is the place to start. The YMCA provides a variety of sports opportunities throughout the year including soccer and baseball. The Newton County Recreation Commission provides sports throughout the year for both youth and adults including football, baseball, fast-pitch softball for girls, and slow-pitch softball for adults.

For the golfer in your family, Newton County is proud to have two exceptional golf courses in our county: Indian Creek Golf Club and The Oaks Course. Both award winning courses.
Lake Varner and Factory Shoals Park are also open to the public for fishing. Factory Shoals is also open for camping, swimming and horseback riding. If you are just looking for a beautiful place to spend some time outside, don't forget about Academy Springs Park in downtown Covington or the walking trails at Turner Lake Park .

Newton is making strides in becoming a leader in fitness, greenspace preservation, and alternate modes of transportation through its multi-use trails. The first hard-surfaced, model segment of multi-use trail is in Oxford. In addition Turner Lake Park has over three miles of soft surface nature trails that wind through the national award-winning park. Also, the Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center below Mansfield has over four miles of soft-surface nature trails. There are shorter but equally interesting nature trails at the Georgia Wildlife Federation and behind Oxford College of Emory University.
