Cemeteries are captivating. Newton County has some of the oldest cemeteries, as early as the 1800s, in Georgia. Covington, GA is well known for its' historic cemeteries that are filled with both beauty and sorrow. The mystery behind these cemeteries draws people to the sites yearly. Why are cemeteries so fascinating? Is it just because they are haunted? Let’s find out!

Each cemetery has an eerie look with old, crumbled gravestones dating back before the Civil War. The iconic gates used in these cemeteries lure you into the graveyard right when you walk in. Locals and tourists are curious about the stories behind each grave and what is beyond. And of course, we all want to hear about the ghost stories!

What makes these graves so interesting and iconic, is the etchings you can create from the grave markers. Our cemetery tours can help you learn more about the grave markers and their meanings.

Surprisingly, doing an etching has become a popular activity for people on cemetery tours. The first step of etching is placing a piece of paper over the marker. Next, start sketching your pencil over the grave marker gently until you start seeing the image. Lastly, look up the meaning of your grave marker symbol. Pretty cool, huh?

Etchings can be kept forever. On your next tour of our cemeteries, why not try out this neat trick? If you are brave enough, maybe try them at night! You never know what will pop out from the graves…
