Covington GA History: Sandtown Place

Are you a history buff? If so, visiting Covington GA history should be on your to do list. Covington Georgia, only 30 minutes east of Atlanta, has a background rich in American history. Covington Georgia was almost completely destroyed by General Sherman during the Civil War; however, something stopped him from doing so.

Because General Sherman did not destroy the beautiful town of Covington, several picturesque antebellum mansions are still standing in the town today.
One of the most beautiful mansions that is still standing in Covington Georgia is Sandtown Place. Sandtown Place is located on 365 Hodges Circle in Covington Georgia. Inside of this antebellum mansion, you will feel as if you have stepped back in history to the 19th century. Sandtown Place is very unique architecturally. Rather than the typical large antebellum columns, it has two stairways leading to its front door, making it unique to Covington GA history.

Sandtown Place was built in 1840 for Mr. John Broughton and provides a glimpse into American history. This home survived the Civil War and is now the home of Sue and Bill Hodges. Sandtown Place has been completely restored; however, the history is still there. The home features its original hand-hewn timbers and wide board floors and ceilings. The location also has a general store from the year 1880 on the property.
Visiting Sandtown Place, and Covington GA history, is a great opportunity to learn more about American history. Covington Georgia has many antebellum mansions still standing today and, like Sandtown Place, they provide an interesting look into the past.
