Our first location is for those who want to run (or walk) away. Newton Trails is a peaceful patch of woodland trails that stretches for miles. The Trails originally began in the 1990s when a committed group of local residents began advocating for a trail system from Atlanta to Augusta. They registered as a nonprofit organization called Newton County Trails-Path Foundation, Inc. and successfully secured grant funds to build a 4.7 mile, soft-surface, multi-use trail at the Charlie Elliot Wildlife Center south of Mansfield. Today, the Newton Trails serve as a safe and convenient location for runners and bikers to enjoy the great outdoors. Sounds like the escape you need? Check out the Newton Trails website for information about group bike rides and running groups!

escape Because it’s located right in the middle of the Newton Trails, your next visit should be to the Charlie Elliot Wildlife Center. The 6,400-acre Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center, managed by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, offers a variety of activities and programs and is a great place to try your hand at a new hobby. This beautiful area is centrally located in the state in a beautiful wooded setting near Mansfield, Georgia, making it easily accessible from Atlanta, Athens, and Macon. The Charlie Elliot Wildlife Center offers hunting, guided and solo hiking, biking, an archery range, horseback riding, and camp spots for picnicking and camping and is the perfect spot to escape to the great outdoors.

escape If you’re looking for a more hydrated adventure then head to the Yellow River. The Yellow River Water Trail is a secluded river that stretches from suburban Atlanta through Newton County. You can put in your kayak at any point on the river trail, but we recommend stopping by the Porterdale Yak Club. They provide visitors with kayaks for a nominal rental fee and show them the best places on the river to start their adventure from! The Yellow River is mostly flatwater too, so you can enjoy some much-needed relaxation on the river, without the worry of rapids.

So, go ahead. Take a vacation day, play hooky, and get outside! Escape to an outdoorsman’s paradise at the Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center. Whatever you need to do to escape those cabin fever blues, Covington is the place for you! Use this easy booking tool to start planning your trip to Covington.
