Explore Newton Trails for Your #FirstDayHikes

newton trailsCan you believe that it’s almost the end of 2016? The New Year will be starting in a few days and that means one thing: planning your resolutions for 2017! One of our top goals this year is to spend more time enjoying the great outdoors. Covington has some incredible trails that are just begging you to hike them. We set out on an adventure and explored our very own trail system, Newton Trails! Now, all you have to do is jumpstart your New Year’s resolutions and get outside.

Newton Trails is a peaceful patch of woodland trails that stretch for miles. The Trails originally began in the 1990s when a committed group of local residents began advocating for a trail system from Atlanta to Augusta. They registered as a nonprofit organization called Newton County Trails-Path Foundation, Inc. and successfully secured grant funds to build a 4.7 mile, soft-surface, multi-use trail at the Charlie Elliot Wildlife Center south of Mansfield. Today, the Newton Trails serve as a safe and convenient location for runners and bikers to enjoy the great outdoors.

This trail also has a primitive (meaning unpaved) portion that runs parallel to the river side. Just imagine all of the wonderful photos you could snap on your New Year’s hike!

Speaking of photos, when you get outside for your New Year’s hike, be sure to post them to GoCovington using #FirstDayHikes. The American Hiking Association and Explore Georgia has declared that this year, their initiative will be to get people to go outside. Through the first week of January, go for a hike! Then, post your hiking adventure photographs onto the GoCovington social media and tag them with #FirstDayHikes. Your photos could be featured on the Explore Georgia website and you could be entered to win some fabulous prizes.

Get outdoors just in time to celebrate 2017 with Newton Trails, Explore Georgia and #FirstDayHikes!
