Geaux Covington: Local Cajun-Inspired Dishes for Fans of The Originals

A few days ago, producer Julie Plec and cast of CW’s The Originals announced that the upcoming fifth season will be the last season of the show. This werewolf spinoff of locally-lensed The Vampire Diaries has continued to gain a large following and keeps the spirit of Mystic Falls alive in our community. In fact, The Originals has filmed on location in Porterdale as well as Covington for various crossover episodes, depicting both New Orleans and the fictional Mystic Falls, Virginia. The CW series is currently in production of Season 5 and will also be returning to Newton County for filming of this final season, scheduled to premiere sometime in 2018.

Since the announcement, fans of The Originals have been expressing their feelings with a barrage of sad memes and GIFs on social media. Now that The Vampire Diaries series has ended, it’s a shame to see this continuation of the supernatural saga end as well. But filming these series’ on location in Covington/Newton County created a very special experience for fans that can be enjoyed long after the shows have wrapped.

Covington, Georgia is #ForeverMysticFalls, and offers a variety of Hollywood attractions like location tours, the Hollywood of the South® TV and Film Museum, and film-inspired menu items at select square restaurants. Fans of The Originals can explore the town for an on location experience and visit the following square merchants in Covington for Cajun-inspired dishes for a reel taste of Southern Hollywood:

RL's Off the Square
fans of the originals

Not only has the exterior of RL’s Off the Square been featured in early episodes of The Vampire Diaries, they also have an authentic menu chock full of traditional creole sensations. Chef Robert Leon Holmes Sr. worked alongside Master Chef Paul Prudhomme of New Orleans for 14 years, and is very knowledgeable and passionate about his Cajun culinary creations. His expertise is perfect for the Hollywood of the South®, having catered parties in his career for celebrities such as Ron Howard, Kevin Costner, and Billy Crystal.

Once you visit this popular local eatery, you’ll forget that you aren’t in The Big Easy!

Mystic Grill
fans of the originals

Fans of The Originals and The Vampire Diaries immediately recognize the famous Mystic Grill Restaurant. After all, this square merchant wouldn’t even exist without these series! This location was used in many episodes of The Vampire Diaries and attracts tourists from all over the world. Visit this local restaurant to enjoy a selection of Cajun-inspired dishes as well that are perfect for fans of The Originals.

For an appetizer, the Mystic Grill offers fried pickles with Doux South brand local Georgia-grown pickles. Atlanta farm-to-table chef Nick Melvin has been pickling since his childhood in New Orleans and throughout his professional culinary journey. So it’s safe to say that these fried pickles will transport your taste buds straight to NOLA.

Another small-bite appetizer option is a plate of fresh cracklin's, or “gratons” as they are called in Louisiana French. This southern, Cajun-inspired treat includes fried pork skins, blue cheese mousse, and hot sauce.

On the square in Covington, Georgia sits a wrought iron patio that looks like a historic balcony in New Orleans. The Irish Bred Pub in Covington is the location of this scenic rooftop balcony. The pub serves traditional Irish cuisine, but if you’re searching for something to remind you of NOLA, they offer a couple of menu items that fit the bill. In addition to many authentic Irish dishes, the pub offers a Brazenhead grilled salmon hoagie with a grilled salmon filet, spinach, and fresh house remoulade on a toasted hoagie roll. You’ll remou-love the Cajun flavors in this fish sandwich!

We also suggest stopping by for their delicious brunch on Sundays between 11am and 4pm for a breakfast you would find in the heart of the Louisiana delta, like hearty salmon benedict with fresh salmon cakes, a poached egg, and dill hollandaise.

For visitors who are 21 and older, the pub also features a very special Hollywood branded cocktail menu with libations inspired by local TV and film productions. Don’t end your visit to the pub without trying a Bloody Kiss or Corpse Reviver, or it may haunt you forever.

And for dessert? The Irish Bred Pub serves a delicious Homemade Irish Bread Pudding, similar to an interpretation of the famous Bananas Foster dessert created in New Orleans. This dessert features a classic southern bread pudding with a Jameson whiskey butterscotch sauce, topped with a crème anglaise and pecans.
