Covington is branded as “The Original Hollywood of the South®” due to the many movies and TV shows that have been filmed here. Tourists come from all over to see the famous filming locations and to discover how unique the filming locations are from each other. For decades, people have traveled to Covington to see where the films or TV shows were shot.
Another reason why people travel to Covington Is because of our rich history and historic homes and mansions. The Twelve Oaks Bed and Breakfast has a rich history that dates back to 1836 when it was just a town house of Judge John Harris. Once the Civil War ended the home was bought by Robert
Frankin Wright for one thousand dollars. Wright and his wife Salina named the house “ The Cedars” They refurbished the home and added a garden to the rear of the mansion. In 1903 the house was sold to Nathanial S. Turner. Turner was a cotton broker who owned Covington Mills. The home was eventually renamed, “Whitehall”. He added the third floor with the dormer windows, an expanded colonnade, and a second-floor. The home has been renovated and care has been given to preserve this remarkable piece of our history. It is on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Twelve Oaks Inn is also known for its' southern hospitality and historic charm. Margaret Mitchell discovered The Twelve Oaks during the filming of Gone With the Wind. Mitchell loved how The Twelve Oaks looked and wanted the mansion to be the inspiration for Ashley Wilkes house. That was the first time the charming mansion was recognized by Hollywood. After that, Twelve Oaks later became a filming site for TV shows and films. The Twelve Oaks is the perfect vacation spot for anyone who wants to discover the history and Hollywood that is all wrapped in one location.
