Covington, Georgia is known for rich history that dates to the early 1800s. From the historic homes that line its beautiful streets to the store buildings, the city is overflowing with historic architecture. One landmark in particular that dates back to 1821 is the brick store. The brick store is undoubtedly the oldest standing brick structure in Covington Georgia today.
Although it is referred to as Brick Store, it was used for many things over the years. The building has been used as a general store, a stage coach stop, a school house, a jail, and more! The brick store played a huge role in Covington’s history. In fact the very first sessions of the Newton County Superior Court were held in the brick store on April 15, 1822.
Due to the historic importance of the building, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 9, 2009.If you visit the building located off U.S. Route 278 and Old Social Circle Road, make sure to check out the many site tablets. One of the site tablets talks about the Stage Coach Crossroads. The second tablet praises Charles M. Jordan for donating the building to the Newton County Historical Society. The final site marker refers to the buildings commission.
