In 2011, the great city of Covington, GA had the opportunity to host a film crew to the movie Flight. This movie was critically acclaimed and got lots of buzz, and a lot of buzz for Covington! The movie’s success reinforced Covington as the Hollywood of the South, and it was an award winning film.
It stars Denzel Washington as William “Whip” Whitaker, a pilot and a drunk, who after miraculously saving a 227 full of passengers from a would-be deadly crash, is exposed to having been intoxicated the entire flight. This inspiring film is filled with emotional turmoil, as Whitaker struggles with alcoholism.
Washington was so convincing in this role, he was nominated for an Oscar. This film was eventually nominated for 33 awards, willing ten of them. Covington should be proud that this Oscar-worthy movie was filmed right here in the Hollywood of the South. This touching film of facing your fears and coming to terms with who you are is sure to be an edge-of-your-seat ride. Not only will you be getting over two hours of a great film, you may even spot places you visit on a daily bases.
