Hollywood of the South: Newton County is Oscar Worthy

Hollywood of the SouthIt was announced in mid-January that Roger Deakins has picked up his eleventh Oscar nomination in Cinematography. This Oscar nod is for Prisoners, a movie staring Hugh Jackman, Viola Davis, and Jake Gyllenhaal. This movie and Oscar nomination is particularly special to Newton County because of its various filming locations. In fact, the main trailer features The Mill in Porterdale, and is one of the iconic scenes from this film.

Released in 2013, the movie follows Jackman’s and Gyllenhaal ‘s character, Kellar Dover and Detective David Loki, in the hunt to find two children (one of which is Dover’s) who seem to have been abducted after wandering off and into an RV from a Thanksgiving dinner. The movie takes you on a suspect ride, with a maze being at the center of all of it. This movie had filming locations in both Lockdale and Newton Counties, but the shot of The Mill is the most memorable from the film. Having Newton County be apart of Oscar history, especially when the nomination is for cinematography is very exciting. Hollywood of the South

But Newton County may have more to look forward to in terms of being proud of its hometown in film. Nancy Schulz son, Dick Schulz, graduated from Newton County High in 2007, and has been working his way up the ladder in Hollywood ever since, making the Hollywood of the South so proud. He is currently working with HitFix, but ultimately hopes to direct. Nancy Schulz, who is a county commissioner, says he keep them up to date with all the latest film news, especially ones that relate back to his hometown of Newton County, like Prisoners. From our land to our citizens, the Hollywood of the South sure is proud to have all this talent; and who knows, maybe one day Dick Schulz will be standing at that podium thanking Newton County for an Oscar he has just won. Either way, things are looking good for Newton County! Watch the trailer here!
