Local Races
Cheerios Challenge
Hosted by Covington Family YMCA, the 19th Annual Covington Cheerios Challenge Is on April 18, 2020 and provides various lengths for runners – 10k, 5k, 1 mile, and Trix Tot Trot. The Cheerios Challenge began in 2001 with a one-mile race for kids. Its purpose to promote exercise and healthy living continue today with four different length races that attract over 1,300 adults and children of all ages. Proceeds help families and children with financial hardship participate in the Y’s programs.
Firehouse 5K
The 11th Annual Covington Fireman's Memorial Firehouse 5K will be on May 16, 2020. If you are looking for an Official AJC Peachtree Road Race Qualifying Event, this is a good option that also helps you give to a good cause. Since 2010, the Covington Fireman's Memorial has been hosting the Firehouse 5K to fund scholarships for graduating high school seniors.
Other Races in the area
There are several other local races that you can participate in during your journey in health and wellness. From February 29 through March 2, Relay for Life is hosting the Run for Hope 5K in Covington. Mansfield Elementary will have its first Hornet Hustle 5K & Fun Run that starts at the school and runs through town on March 7, 2020. Another great cause is the 4th annual Born to Run 5K on May 9, 2020. This race benefits Newton Pregnancy Resource Center and proceeds go towards helping women with unplanned pregnancies by offering medical-grade pregnancy tests, limited ultrasounds, nurse consultations, pregnancy options, coaching and more. If you are not yet ready to race in a spring 5K, you can use the time now to start preparing for the annual Fuzz Run 5K on September 12, 2020. Hosted by the Covington Police Who Care, this local race is the largest participatory event in Covington with runners passing along the beautiful streets of the downtown area.
Cycling
Community Bike Ride
Depending on your fitness goals, you might prefer to hit the bike trails in Newton County with the Covington Community Bike Ride. This community group meets in the square for year-round outings on the first Sunday of every month. The wellness events are for riders of all abilities looking for a relaxing, conversational ride along the area's low-traffic streets and trails. During the outings, you can choose to cycle for a short 4.3-mile loop or continue a longer varying route.
Covington Century Ride
An amazing health and wellness ride in local cycling is the Covington Century Ride at Oxford College on July 25, 2020. Organized by Southern Bike League, the cycling event has lengths of 32, 67, or 100 miles. You can pedal your fastest or meander at a slower pace – the choice is yours! What really makes this one of the best local wellness events for fitness enthusiasts is the chance to cycle across Newton County and the surrounding area. You’ll pass through historic towns of Covington, Oxford, Jersey, Rutledge then continue through Social Circle, Newborn and Mansfield.
