This upcoming 4th of July, bring the family to the square in Covington, GA to celebrate with us at Main Street Covington’s annual festival. The event has been re-branded this year as Stars & Stripes Fest 2017, and includes just as much fun as years past— plus more! This 2017 event will kickoff around 2:30pm on the Square Park on Tuesday, the 4th and we will have a day packed full of family-fun activities. We are very excited to party with thousands of visitors on this Independence Day, and enjoy hanging out with some very special stars and guest appearances.
Musical guests to appear throughout the day include Jorge Alvarez, The Old Soles, Raymond Hamonds, the Newton County Community Band, Grassville & Johnny Roquemore, Amy Rae, and conclude with local band Drive Time. So, “Heat Seekers,” listen up! There will also be a special appearance by Maureen Dowdell from In the Heat of the Night. This is your chance to crank up the Heat this July in the original Sparta, Mississippi and meet Nurse Tracey Boggs, herself.
There will also be a large selection of activities and thrills for kids of all ages, such as a rock wall, zip line, large inflatables, spider jump, and a dunking booth presented by the Covington Fire Department. For the tiny tots who may be attending the event with you, we’ll also have a cow train, and Toddler Town presented by Alcovy CASA, which will include hula hoops, bubbles, chalk, and other children’s activities. Some of these fun activities will be available for a small fee, but event admission is completely FREE!
Beginning at 4:00 pm, there will be a Golf Cart Parade around the Square benefitting the Newton County Special Olympics Equestrian Team. This is an event tradition on July 4th, and we absolutely love seeing the unique and creative golf cart creations that our participants come up with! Check out a few examples of last year’s parade entries below:
Stars & Stripes Fest will have limited golf cart shuttles throughout downtown courtesy of JACO Contracting. Designated handicap parking will be available at the downtown branch of BB&T which is located at 1134 Clark Street SW. So plan to meet the shuttles there if you need some assistance!
Food vendors will be selling a variety of options such as pizza, hotdogs and hamburgers, barbeque and sandwiches along with ice cream, shaved ice, and Italian Ice to wash it down. If you have a craving for your favorite Downtown Covington restaurants, they will be open as well as some of the retail stores with special Fourth of July promotions. Some restaurants like the Mystic Grill and Irish Bred Pub are holding fireworks viewing parties for an additional fee to watch from their rooftop or patio seating. Please contact the restaurants directly for reservations or questions.
The team with Main Street Covington will be holding very special giveaways for t-shirts and event koozies, as well as offering a chance to win $250 in Main Street Bucks to use at square merchants!
So, after you’ve stayed the day for this great annual event, light the night with one of the Southeast’s largest firework displays starting at 9:30 PM. Check out our recent article highlighting some of the most popular viewing spots for this fantastic fireworks display. There are plenty of areas in which you can join the crowd on the square, or find more spacious tailgating areas nearby. The music for the fireworks display will be simulcast on 92.3 FM for those who would like to tune-in. We welcome you to book your stay in one of our many great area hotels for a convenient, comfortable night following the fireworks finale.
This event will be kicking off in rain or shine! Some activities may be available for a fee; however, admission to the event is absolutely free.
