“Summer days drifting away to ah, oh, those summer nights.” Is it just us or does the onset of summer coming instantly conjure up whirling thoughts of blue skies, cool beverages, and the sweet sounds of your favorite tunes releasing you into melodic abyss? Not much compares to evenings spent soaking in the setting summer sun on an outstretched outdoor blanket with friends and family, winding down from life’s stresses. Thankfully, Summer Nights on the Square Concerts in Covington, GA are just around the corner promising nothing short of a bit of a summer oasis.
Kicking off the first of the live shows in this free summer series hosted by the Arts Association in Newton County and Main Street Covington is Grammy finalists, The WannaBeatles. These guys bring back classic songs from the timeless boy band, The Beatles, and are heavily influenced by the 60’s and 70’s era of music and culture. Hailing from Nashville, TN, it is always a highly anticipated treat to witness these fab four recreate hits from The Beatles’ songbook. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to see their onstage antics in action June 14th on the square at 7:00 PM.
July 4th not only means Stars and Stripes Fest comes back around, but also the annual patriotic concert performed by the Newton County Community Band, an ensemble of local volunteer musicians coming from all age groups in the area to do what they love. Headed up by Alan Fowler, Band Director at Eastside High School, July 4th is one of several dates throughout the year you can catch NCCB and their instrumental music stylings by local talent during free spring and holiday concerts. Be sure you’re in attendance for Stars and Stripes Fest to experience this hometown hit.
As the dog days of summer start to wind down, the atmosphere on the square will still be rocking and rolling with Departure: The Journey Tribute Band in August and Rhythm Nation closing out the series in September. Both bands originate from Atlanta and are known for dazzling audiences far and wide. Departure puts on a high-energy replication of the 80’s rock super group, Journey, at each performance, leading the crowd through nostalgic sing-along songs with a reminiscent on-stage chemistry. Dust off those Member’s Only jackets and tease your hair up big for this one, folks. You’re sure to be dancing your way down memory lane in no time. Keep up that contagious energy for Rhythm Nation, an award winning and internationally performing dance band. Their ten-piece band with four front line vocalists, four-piece rhythm section, and two horn players will get the whole crowd on their feet as they blend elements of popular and timeless genres of music ranging from current hits to disco, jazz, and swing.
If your love of music is never satisfied, don’t fret, Live at Lunch is the daytime version of the Summer Nights Series and gives Covington citizens a break from their humdrum lunch routines with a splash of sunshine and a heavy dose of smooth sounds. From 12:00 to 1:00 on Thursdays starting in May, every musical palette will get their fill with selections from a vast array of genres.
