Suns Out, Funs out: Things to do this Spring in Covington

In honor of March 20th being the first day of spring, we are bringing you 10 things to do this spring is Covington. Grab your sun glasses and your camera, it’s time to have some fun in the sun in the Hollywood of the South©.

  

1.     Trails

Walking is a great thing for all ages and also very healthy was to spend an afernoon. Studies show that walking improves your mood, balance, and coordination as well as strengthens your bones and muscles. If you’re looking for a healthy activity to do this spring, take a walk on one of Covington’s various trails. Two of Covington’s main trails are the Eastside Trail and Lake Varner Trail. Newton County trails provide a safe place to ride a bike, a new route for your run or an unpaved path on our current network of beautiful, family-friendly, multi-use trails that foster health, fitness and love of the outdoors.

 

2.     Walk of Stars

If you’re more of a tourist type person who likes to sight see and take selfies, visit the Covington Walk of Stars. Tourists and locals alike can see the pavers honoring productions that have filmed in Covington and learn about the movies and actors who have shaped the film history of Covington. Perhaps more importantly…take some amazing selfies on our Hollywood “back lot”. The Walk of Stars is located right on the sidewalks of the Covington Square. There are over 35 pavers lining downtown Covington, with more to be added. The Covington Walk of Starts is a self-guided attraction that is free to enjoy.

 


 



3.     Dabney Riding Academy: Horseback Riding


 Saddle up! If you are a horse-lover, or would like to learn how to ride like a true equestrian, this is the perfect activity for you. Dabney Riding Academy is located in nearby rural Mansfield, GA, with a stunning facility that is home to a variety of gorgeous horses. The academy offers horseback riding lessons as well as stunt riding lessons using fifth-generation techniques.

 


4. The Fly Trap

Our friends at The Fly Trap offers much more than your typical gymnastics facility. Defy gravity and take the leap by trying their Ultimate Trapeze classes and instruction. No aerobics experience is needed, and they give expert training, no matter your age! Bring the little ones to learn to spread their wings, try your hand at the Ultimate Trapeze, or try the real deal with their High Flying Trapeze instruction, which includes a real fly bar and a live catcher.

 

 

5.     Roth Wild Adventures: Kayaking & Paddleboarding


 Available in Porterdale, GA, on the Yellow River, Roth Wild Adventures is the outfitter for local watersports and aquatic fun! The expert team at Roth Wild offers clinics on kayaking, river rafting, and paddleboarding. The outfitter occasionally holds community events, like the evening Glow Paddle excursion they hosted last week. They also rent gear and equipment, so grab a paddle and come get mellow on the Yellow River.

 

6. Factory Shoals Recreation Park

This beautiful nature park, situated along the Alcovy River in the southern portion of Newton County, contains over 450-acres. The park is a haven for picnickers, fishermen, campers, swimmers, hikers, rafters and nature lovers.

7.  Lake Varner / Cornish Creek Reservoir

The Cornish Creek Reservoir offers a natural setting to relax and enjoy the outdoors. Lake Varner Park offers opportunities for fishing, having a picnic, or just enjoying nature and watching wildlife. The main function of Newton County Water Resources and the Cornish Creek Reservoir is to ensure a safe, abundant, and high quality drinking water supply for the residents of Newton and Walton Counties. Newton County Water Resources also manages the Cornish Creek Reservoir and the Lake Varner park facilities to provide enjoyment and recreation for area citizens and visitors.

 

 

8.     Turner Lake Park

Turner Lake Park has everything from fishing, relaxing, sports and more! It has three miles of paved and unpaved trails, a beautiful lake, and the Turner Lake Complex. The Turner Lake Complex has four state of the art softball fields that are easy to access. They also offer a golf range, baseball fields, opportunities to play basketball and cheerleading! This complex, spanning 158 acres, is also the perfect spot for kayaking families.

 

9.     Golf

Covington has two convenient golf courses that are ready for use. The Oaks Golf Course is located conveniently 2 minutes from I-20, exit 88 and is set beneath beautiful, graceful oaks in the heart of  historic Covington. Ashton Hills’ pristine fairways and jaw-dropping greens are just the beginning of what you can expect to see during your visit. Their Desmond Muirhead designed facility brings you eighteen of the finest holes in golf.

 

 

10.  Square Park

 From shopping to dinning, or just sitting on a bench under a tree reading a good book, the Square is the perfect place. The Covington Square sits in the heart of downtown Covington. Be sure to enjoy the luncheon concerts every Thursday in May!
