#WeirdWednesday: The Butcher Block Deli

butcher block cafeThe Butcher Block Deli and Café is a local lunchtime favorite for the hungry citizen of Covington, Georgia. The restaurant is housed in an unassuming shopping center and has been serving tasty dishes since its opening. They even serve Boar’s Head meats and cheese in their delicious sandwiches. The Butcher Block Deli and Café specializes in customizable sandwiches, the best chicken salad in Covington, mouth-watering hot dogs, and…ghosts? Well, maybe. Supposedly, the East Georgia Paranormal Society has declared this eatery as THE most haunted place in Covington. But, is it?

For those not “in-the-know”, the East Georgia Paranormal Society is a research-based group from the big city of Atlanta. The group was founded in 1996, and their specialty is ghost hunting, using scientific instruments and methods to debunk the monster under your bed. These guys know their stuff, too. Back in 2014, the gang visited a local haunt, Gaither’s Plantation (you can read more about the Gaither’s Plantation ghosts HERE), and held overnight ghost hunting tours inside the house! Now, the evidence they found is currently not available for public eyes. But, we have a feeling it’s pretty spooky! The East Georgia Paranormal Society’s commitment to uncovering the paranormal truth is pretty inspiring and, if they say Butcher Block is haunted, we’re ready to believe them.

butcher block cafeWhy is the Butcher Block so haunted? The restaurant isn’t housed in a historical building or on a historic site. But, that doesn’t stop the spirits from making the restaurant home for eternity. Waitresses have claimed that cups and plates will fly off tables, right onto the floor. Mysterious voices drift through the restaurant, after hours. No one is sure why these events happen. Could it be that the building is located on some kind of “portal” to the supernatural realm? Or, could it be a hitherto unknown Civil War battle site? The Paranormal Society is keeping as silent as the grave on the subject.

But, you can always stop in to the Butcher Block Deli yourself. Have a chat with the friendly staff, stay for the chicken salad sandwiches, and just maybe, you’ll get a glimpse of the paranormal for yourself. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.
